Question:

How long did it take you to come up with a name for you child?

Did you have a list and narrow it down, or did you just find a name and stick with it?

I was talking to my sister in-law today, who is due with her 4th on Aug 10th. They're had a name picked out since her first trimester. No list made. No discussion. Picked a name and that was that. My husband and I had a baby on May 5th and we didn't even have any ideas until a few days before I went into labor! lol.

Just interested in what other parents did. (Would post it in Baby Names if it wasn't filled with teenage girls who are picking out names for their "future" triplets.)

  1. It took me almost all 9 months to come up with the name. Before I was pregnant, I had picked out Chrystal Angelique for a girl and Leviathan Alexander for a boy. However, when I picked these names, I wasn't thinking I would have to get them past a  husband. So, when I tossed those names out as a suggestion.... he was NOT happy. So, we picked up the baby names book and went through them one by one. Each one being rejected by one of us for one reason or another. Finally we got to the M's just before she was born and we both agreed on Megan.

So, yeah... it took almost the whole 9 months. LOL

  2. I looked through baby name books, asked friends, thought about for the whole 9 months and had a few ideas but wasn't ever really sure. I got to the hospital and the nurse said "What's his name going to be?" and I said, "I don't know, I'm thinking maybe Ethan." And she said "What, unless he comes out looking like something else?" So I just kind of went with it. I had obsessed over names for so long that by the time I had him I was tired of thinking about it! Lol. So Ethan it was. =]

  3. I waited until I saw them.  When I was pregnant with my son Jason he kicked so hard he got his foot stuck in my ribs and the first thing he did after he was born (before he was given to me) was pee 6ft in the air so he needed a tough guy name.  My daughter was born a little jaundice, but she was so beautiful.... Her  name is Amber.

  4. I had my names picked out before i was even pregnant! (it took me a while) We choose the names we wanted (a boy and girl) and stuck with it.

  5. We discovered we both love the name Owen and decided that would be the frst name if it was a boy within a few weeks after finding out we were pregnant, but after we found out it was a boy for sure, we went through every name we could think of until we decided that Owen Alexander went nicely together about 3 weeks ago!

  6. LOL!  Sorry, but the teenage girls with triplets comment was funny.  Unfortunately, you'll find those here too - along with "Kate," a guy who claims to be a 20 - year - old dad of three (also claiming his oldest died a few days ago, all the while still on here answering and asking random questions - obviously the deceased son is a fake and really sick story), etc.  I think it's all the same person, actually.  But I digress.  Anyway, back to your original question.  My husband and I started brainstorming names as soon as we got pregnant.  We obviously crossed the girl names off the list when we found out we were having a boy.  We finally decided on a name in the middle of my third trimester.  On the other hand, some friends of ours decided they wouldn't even start thinking of names until they saw their son for the first time.  No offense to them, but I think the mother must have still been on painkillers when she signed the BC - the name is absolutely hideous!  Perhaps they were just a fluke, though.

  7. Our boy name was easy... my husband is a fourth, so our son would be the fifth.  But we could NOT come up with a girl name.  My husband hated all of my favorite names, but all he would suggest were stupid joke names.  We finally narrowed it down to 5 names that we were both okay with.  Neither of us were totally in love with any of them, but at least they were names we could both agree on.  But I still couldn't make a final decision!  So I put the names in a hat and drew one out: Alexandra.  But that didn't sound right, so we decided on Elizabeth.  We wrote "Lizzie" on the little file where we kept all our baby papers, and we took it with us to the hospital with us.  After a very difficult 14-hour labor, I was totally out if when they asked "What's her name?"  I was like, omg, I don't know!  I guess... Alexandra!  And that was that!

  8. With my first, my husband and I picked out his name as soon as the sonogram showed us that we were having a boy.  I wanted Colton and he wanted Benjamin and so we combined the two into Colben.  He is now 2 and we just call him Cole.  With our second, we waited on names until we knew the s*x again and were confirmed with another boy.  We went through a lot of baby books and found Sabien (rythms with Fabian) because it is unique.  We call him Sebby or occasionally Ben.

  9. Within a day of my pregnancy being confirmed by the doctor, I had a name picked out. We had some trouble picking a name out of three we liked for our daughter, but other than that, it's not a big decision making process for us. Think of a  name. Tell the other. Agreed. I'm 7wks along with my 5th and if it's a boy, he'll be Cameron Austin and if it's a girl she' ll be Hailey Morgan. Done deal.

One of my best friends, on the other hand, didn't pick a name for any of her children until they were already a day or two old. Her youngest had to stay in the hospital an extra day because she couldn't decide on a name! and ya can't leave without one. lol

    Best Wishes =] and congrats!

  10. well i had some names that i like but i refused to pick a name for my baby (i opted for not knowing the s*x) until i saw her and as soon as i did i knew her name and the funny thing is both my boyfriend and i pick the exact same name for her! With out telling each other what that name was. BUT i did pick her second name after my sister coz she is such a big part of my life and i wanted that to reflect in my daughter.

  11. my sons name is anthony and ever since i could remember i loved that name and always wanted to name my son that buuuuuuuuuuuuut my bf hated that name with a passion but of course like always i get my way and i have a little anthony i couldnt imagine calling him anything else

  12. It took us about a week to pick out our first child's name.  We just ended up looking at a baby name book and instantly found the name that we wanted.  Our second child is due in September and it took a while longer to pick out her name.  Now we are just trying to figure out a middle name.

  13. by around the third month we had one picked out for our 1st,

I am weeks now and we have a boy name, but can't agree on a girl name... we have had our first son's named since before we were married, now we just have to wait to have a boy :)

  15. Haha, it's true about the name thing. And I've seen the guy BoSox was talking about...love the story tellers on here.

Anyway, my husband and I picked names out rather quickly. We made a fun little list, narrowed it down and picked one by my second trimester. We had middle names picked out first, for they were after certain people, and then tried to pick a first name to go with it.

  16. 8 seconds = she was born!

  17. LOL--I love the way you describe the baby names section.

My husband and I had our daughter's name picked out before we conceived. When we were first married we would entertain each other on long car trips by coming up with potential baby names, and then vetoing them. My husband's father was named Ron (he passed away 2 years ago), so as we were doing this, we thought it would be cute to name our first child after their grandpa. I hate the name Ronald, so we came up with Aaron Joseph (after grandpa and dad) for a Boy, and Veronica Julie (after grandpa and a cousin) for a girl. It stuck, and when we had our little Veronica (Roni) we were overjoyed!
