How long did it take you to learn the flip turn?

Well I had my first swim team practice today and I was in the "silver" group, which is for kids who are not amazing but aren't horrible either (It goes Bronze, Silver, Gold). I can't believe I even got there I thought I would get on bronze because I know the strokes but I don't think I do very good on them (I don't know how to flip turn) Anyway they had us do the free style, back stroke, and Breast stroke and after we finished practice (it was a hour and thirty minutes) the couch called me and 3 other people over and said we needed to move up to gold and that he would see us at 7:00 am to start practice.

Sooo anyway I'm really nervous because I don't know how to do a flip turn which I know it a big deal considering if you can do one right it could take a good 5 seconds off your time! So now that I'm done rambling I was just wondering how long did it take you to learn the flip turn?

And please don't answer this question with a I don't know how to do a flip turn!

Thanks!

  1. It took me about an hour to learn, one day after practice early my freshman year.

Then a few weeks of doing it in practice (and occasionally smashing my ankles on the wall) to get good.

A month so before I could do it without thinking.

  2. A couple days to get it down with a lot of practice.

Make sure to come into the wall fast! Don't let it intimidate you. Use your last stroke to start you flip and get a good push off the wall. It really take practice, and I would advise watching someone underwater as they do it for a good example.

You will continue to perfect over your entire swimming career. It is so important to get a good turn! Could be the difference in your race! Good luck!

  3. it doesnt take long to learn i learned in about a week but i tried every practice

  4. i am a freshmen in highschool and I started to swim this year.

One of the older girls ashowed me how to do it.  I could do it right away.  It looked horrible though, and it made me slower at first.  Just always do it in pracice and you will get so much better.  Don't give up. e3amil me

    hk

    have fun

  5. i was always afraid to try to do it,

    but once i did,

i got in on the first try.

tuck your legs tight to your chest but dont tuck your head in to your knees, you might knock your head on your knees, trust me, i've done it before.

blow all your air out when your flipping.

  6. I learned in an hour, took about a week of practice to get the timing down and learn how far to start from the wall on the turn.

  7. Hey! well it really depends on your coach and their different metholds of teaching you. the way that i learned it(lane line methold) it took me two days to get it down. but to do the flip turn that i do now in meets took me 2 months! And for backstroke you  just count how many strokes it takes you starting from the flag till you touch the wall and take away a strake and flip onto your stomach and flip the way you do in freestyle. For an example, it takes me four strokes(because im short) to touch the wall. On my thrid stroke i flip onto my stomach and take ONE stroke and flip. A tip that helped me was where ever your arms point in streamline is where you will go so always point in the right direction. And make sure you dont stay on your stomach too long becuase then you will get disqualified. >.<  No a flip turn dosent really take 5 sec. off your time but it will speed you up if you do it right or slow you down if you dont do it right. Like i can do a 27 for a 50 free and open turn and do a 26.57 with a flip turn. So yes it does help you. and in competetive swimming, even .01 matters.:) keep swimming!

  8. it depends on how hard you practice. it didnt take me too long. depends on your dedication. dont worry too much about it. your coach is probably aware that you cant flip yet. =D

  9. it only took me like 5 min i got it on my first try. REMEMBER THAT YOU ONLY DO FLIP TURNS ON FREESTYLE AND BACKSTROKE. FOR BREAST AND BUTTERFLY YOU DO OPEN TURNS. FOR ME THE OPEN TURNS WERE A LOT HARDER. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

  10. wow yr swimming levels are really layed off. ive been swimming for 7.5 years and i just got into gold. in order to get into bronze you have to know and do a 200 of each stroke and know yr turns and touches. anyway to yr question, u only do turns on freestyle and backstroke, u do 2 hand touches on breast and butterfly. it took me a good year to get it done properly, even though it only took around a month to figure out the basics. bach and free turns are exactly the same but on back yr on yr back, flip over and do one freestyle pull and turn. i hope i helped.....i kno soo much about swimming......if u want to any thing eles u can email me.....it be veru happy to answer yr questions.........its     kenda_lynn@hotmail.com

  11. it took me about a week, i still cant go straight over though...

  12. It took me about 3 practices to learn a flip turn. It's very hard to get your arms and legs positioned correctly. Don't sweat it.
