  1. I won my first match. In our class we put a lot into applying good techniques. Many schools don't do that. They mainly practice for competition. As a white belt or yellow belt I went to the junior nationals and competed against many advanced ranks. I didn't win first place but I beat many orange, green, and purple belts. I had a lot of fun. I was the lowest ranked person there. I went on after that the place in every tournament that I competed in.

  2. well, when I first started out, I was in your position. I was a white belt and all I ever did was spar against blue belts and would always lose because I could never get out of their guard and plus they can submit me with armbars, triangles, etc. It took me about ONE month to start passing them and now I can easily overpower their guards and pass and submit them from side control. Just keep up the hard work and you will learn what is best for you to do in certain situations that will allow you to be better. SO to answer your question, took about  a month for me, however, everyone learns at a different rate so you might get better sooner or later but never give up! good lucK!
