How long did you lose hair after giving birth?

When I gave birth I didn't notice much hair loss until I moved into a house with hardwood floors throughout. I did a lot of daily sweeping and it seemed like crazy! I started to clog the tub and I bought one of those hair catchers for the drain. Now that it's installed, I can see how much I'm losing. I lose a lot of hair, so much that it's completely covered by the end of my shower. I do tie my hair up during the day, every day, or I twist it up and secure it with a clip. I'm not sure if I notice more hair loss during the shower because it doesn't fall out during the day because my hair is secured together.

It's 9 months since I gave birth and I still have a lot of hair loss. If I wet my hair and comb through, I can get a handful of hair that I have to put in the trash because it's so much.

I've read different things, saying it could be normal to lose it 6-12 months after birth,or for a few months. I don't notice thining other than what's in my hands and in my shower. What do you think, is it normal?

  1. my hair started to fall out at abour four months after i gave birth, it was everywhere. i clogged all the sinks my daughter had hair all over her clothes. I would have to constantly vaccum the whole house, i would wake up in the morning with dred locks of all the hair that would fall out. and my hair was constantly knotty. I was really scared, i knew it was normal for some people, but i even ended up with a bald spot on my head. The hair loss slowed down now, it will go away. It happens becuase when your pregnant, your hair growth increases its speed, and at the same rate while new hair grows in old hair falls out. While pregnant the old hair doesnt fall out, thats y we end up w/ some much hair while pregnant. Then all of a sudden dooms day comes and ALL of it falls out. My daughter is eight months old, and it all stopped. Dont worry you'll be fine, just take vitamins.

  2. My baby is 4 months old and I am still losing hair like crazy. I think it may have slowed down some tho.

With my other kids (I have a total of 5 biological kids); I had slowed down by 6 months and stopped altogether by 10 to 11 months.

  3. I lost alot of my hair in the back of my head.  It happened at about 3 months after the baby was born.  People say that you don't really lose more than normal, but I had bald spots (no thyroid problems or amnemia, either).  I don't know, maybe it could help if you use hair products that have more vitamins?  Go to a dermatologist.  I went to one, and she was able to help me.  With therapy, my bald spot filled in within about 4-6 weeks.

Also, maybe a good nutritionist may be able to help you?  I wonder if the falling out of hair after a baby is related to changing horomone levels and depletion of something in a woman's body...

  4. My son is 4 months old and I have noticed the same thing.  I never really noticed it THIS much with my daughter.  It will slow down...however, if you start  noticing really thin patches in your hair go to your doctor...you could have a hormonal issue that was pregnancy induced.  I would think not though because we all go through this after having a child.

  5. It will stop coming out .  It all depends on the individual and don't worry about it like you said it is normal for this to happen.  Use a good conditioner and you won't have to pull on your hair too much to comb it through.  Eat well as I am sure you are and it will eventually come back in thick again. It will be fine.
