Question:

How long do Burmese tend to grieve for their companions?

I have a year old Burmese cat, and his sister recently died (she was hit by a car). It's been about five days now, and he seems very depressed, and is constantly sitting at the door waiting for her to return, and walking around the house crying pitifully. I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with a cats companion dying, especially a Burmese? And if so, how long did your cat grieve for, and did you buy another cat, and if so, how long after the death of the first one?

  1. I'm sorry for your loss but if you let the other cat out too it's very likely to suffer the same fate so keep it inside.

  2. Some dogs and cats are like humans and grieve for a long time. some for life.  for some (most I believe) it helps to get another companion

  3. I have (had) two cats, they were together 11+ years and best of friends, Chelsea had an aneurysm and we lost her.  My other cat called for her for days and days, running and looking any time he heard something, then he started getting depressed, he would just sit there... it was SO sad to watch!  I think they greive just like humans...he was missing their companionship and play time... about 7 months later after much thought I got another cat... she was sweet when I met her so I thought they would be a great match... I learned after I brought her home, even with a week of isolation, she was just a "people" cat... not a "cat" cat... she hisses and swats at him and he is the sweetest thing on earth... Now I am sad because again he seems sad that the new cat is mean to him.

All in good meaning but if you get a new cat, give your greiving cat, time and then pick another cat carefully.

I hope this helps... it is so hard to watch a pet greive
