Question:

How long do I have to wait to get a new prescription for my glasses and no longer wearing hard contacts?

I have developed severe allergies and can no longer wear my hard contacts. Eye dr. said I should wait about 6 weeks before getting new prescription for glasses so that cornea has completed back to somewhat normal. Has anyone heard of the time length for something like this. My old eyeglass prescription is beginning to get weak for me to see through. Didn't want to spend extra money getting new lenses every two weeks or so.

  1. Recovery time for the cornea to return to a more normal shape varies from person to person.  It usually occurs within 4 weeks of discontinuing hard and gas-permeable contact lenses, although it can take as long as 10 weeks.  Before filling the eyeglass prescription we usually wait until the eye test known as the refraction yields two successive results that are about the same.

6 weeks sounds like a safe waiting period, but I would be inclined to also test at 5 or 7 weeks to insure that the test results are stable.
