How long do animal shelters keep their animals until they put them to sleep?

I'm just doing a paper for school and i thought it would be interesting to know this, but anyways plz help me out!

It varies from animal to animal.

As you can imagine, sick, old or feral animals get put down early, white kittens and younger cats get given more time.

It also depends on how long an animal has been at the shelter without getting adopted.

One cat was at the shelter for 2.5 years before someone adopted him ;) other cats get put down within a week of their arrival to the shelter.

I dont know but it makes me sad.  There are some shelters that dont kill animals though.  They have a no-kill policy.  

Just something else you can add in your paper, or not.
