How long do bike tires last? I have a bike that's been sitting in the garage for ten years...?

I'm going to put in new inner tubes. Will the tires be ruined after ten years? The tread is fine, but I don't know how well the material ages.

  1. Considering the cheap price of a new tyre I would just replace them. Why take chances? Worn tyres are a potential safety issue and that surely comes before cost.

  2. Time for new tires.   Rubber does deteriorate over time, especially if you live where there is the season called Winter.   Skimping on tires is unsafe as h**l; do you really wanna be worrying about when your tire will fail as you ride?

  3. See if there are cracks in the tread or sidewall. If you see any, replace the tires and tubes. You don't want them to fall apart when you're riding at speed.

  4. If the garage has been dry and cool for the last ten years the tires could be fine. If there is no cracking and the rubber still feels flexible then try them out. Of course if it was a motorcycle I'd say change the tires just for safety sake.

  5. Personally, I'd leave them. Especially the inner tubes - there is no reason to replace them. I have tyres and inner tubes that are more than thirty years old and are fine, but I have had to replace one pair due to rot. Age is irrelevant, as long as they are in good condition. There is no need to waste your money.
