We have a mixed maine coon and is still grieving after a year from losing her dominate step brother. Would it be best for us to get another male or female or does it make a difference?

  1. Cats can grieve for a long time. it is probably best to get your buddy someone new. male or female doesnt really matter just make sure to spay or neuter.

  2. One of my cats never has really recovered from losing our dominate MC mix, and then a year later, his mother.  She would only eat when he ate, and now it seems the dynamics of the whole family are thrown off.  New kittens may not help...if she doesn't bond with them as kittens, they may grow up to be the dominate kitty and pick on her.  I've helped my cat along with extra attention, a special place for her food dish, and a bit of a push to be the top cat (I interfere in squabbles and  help her win).  I did get a couple of new kittens, but they aren't close to her.  No matter what anyone says, cats do really bond, and they grieve just as we do...I've seen it even in feral (monitored) cat colonies!
