well there are different kinds of goldfish so i say about 10 years with proper care for the 12 cent kind

They've been documented to live more than 25 years.

There are koi in Japan that families have passed from generation to generation, but this is not documented or proven.

mine lived for 8 years in a 55 gal. tank but I have seen ponds that friends have with fish 15 years old. I gave away 2 butterfly koi that were 10 years old they are now 11 and doing very well in a friends pond.

Way into their twenties when given the right conditions. They need enough space to grow, and good water conditions.

The average life span of a goldfish is upwards of 12 years. They can live much longer, even up to 20 years of age, when given the correct environmental conditions. Taking on the responsibility of caring for a goldfish is quite a commitment!
