I have a 4 month old girl and she has been really unsettled recently at night. I know from other mums on here that's this is prime time for a growth spurt, but am unsure as to how long it will last for? Any ideas?

  1. Growth spurts last anywhere from 24 hours to a week.  My son's usually were about 2 days.  And lucky for me he did all his fussing and eating during the day, but didn't affect his nighttime sleeping.

My daughter is different though.  Her 3 week growth spurt was 3 days of eating non stop around the clock.  We're coming up on 6 weeks here and I'm sure it'll be more of the same.

Just comfort, hold, hug, nurse often (if breastfeeding) and you'll get through it.  Then you have a good two months before the 6 months spurt!!

  2. It can be anything from what you're feeding her, to growth spurts, to teething.

Growth spurts are an on and off thing. It depends on your child, really. There is a general time where they have more. I read it in Parent or American Baby, or maybe it was online. Regardless, I'm getting you some info to check out. :)

    Hope it helps.

"When do babies have growth spurts?

Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months (more or less). Babies don't read calendars, however, so your baby may do things differently.

Growth spurts don't stop after the first year - most moms notice growth spurts every few months during the toddler years and periodically thereafter on through the teenage years.

How long do growth spurts last?

Growth spurts usually last 2-3 days, but sometimes last a week or so. "

"will grow faster in his first four months than at any other time."

"Some experts think that they last between two to seven days and happen at predictable ages—10 days, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months. Others say there's no set schedule and that the timing varies from baby to baby. But moms recognize a growth spurt when they see one. "I've had mothers swear that their babies grew overnight," says Michelle Lampl, M.D., Ph.D., a growth researcher and associate professor of anthropology at Emory University, in Atlanta. "They tell me their child's legs were suddenly longer or the diaper or socks seemed much tighter." Dr. Lampl's own research backs them up: She's found that babies can gain a whopping one to three ounces and grow almost a centimeter in length in 24 hours, followed by days to weeks of almost no growth at all."

  3. kind of going thru that now with my 4month old, but he is not affected at night, just very irritable during the day, fights his bottle sometimes gulps it other times, his temperature is up and down...I'm guessing it's all due to teething??? and yes a growth spurt.

hang in there..hope it doesn't last too long!

  4. Normally it lasts one to two weeks. You can usually tell by the extra amount of milk she wants if she's still going through it.

Keep in mind she might have started teething and is unsettled because of that. 4 months is a very common age for teething pain. Well and if it's combination of both, you're really in for a treat ;)

Good luck, mine is having the same problems. Only he is having a hard time during the day. Thank god he sleeps wonderfully night, because come 8pm I am exhausted!
