  1. They can live for many years with proper care.  Always have at least a few shells of various size for him to choose from.  Here's an excellent hermie site:

  2. hermit crabs can live for 80 years and i think maybe 7 or 8 diff shells!

  3. My Fernado live almost two years I only got him one extra he outgrew the other one

  4. In the wild they can live up to 22 years!

In capacity, their life is shortened by half though making it a good 11-12 and a half years if well cared for.

If they get sick or have any other mis convenience before that period of time, they may pass away sooner.

You should get about 2 shells for starter. The one the crab is in and another one a little bit larger so when it grows it can move into the larger shell. Then, keep replacing the shells for larger ones until it has reached it's top growth. You can also put in different shells with different patterns on it of the same size sometimes and he'll move about. One day, he may have a smiley face shell while the next he may move into the fire shell you give him! It's interesting!

I've included a few websites below that show real life experience of the lifespan (1st website) and then just info. on the hermit crab (2nd website).

  5. sorry i don't know
