  1. Taken from an answer I gave to a very similar question:

    Steps to becoming an anesthesiologist:

    1. Undergraduate degree - 3-6 years, up to $50K a year, depending on where you are and how hard you work. Must take biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, and physics. Also must take MCAT.

    2. Med School - 4 years, up to $60K a year. 2 years of intense sciences followed by USMLE step I exam and 2 years of rotations and USMLE Step II

    3. Preliminary year - Paid dirt, get intense general medical/surgical training (optional if you are a strong candidate)

    4. Resident years - 3-4 years, Paid dirt, though you're likely to hit a decent wage by your final years. Expect long hours (60-80 a week)

5 Fellowship - 1-3 years Gain expertise in a special type of anesthesiology (ie. neuro, pediatric etc.) optional but can make a big difference for the rest of your career.

6 Board Certification - Congrats you made it!

As you can see its a long and difficult process with lots of loans, lots of hard work, and little pay, but most are able to pay off their debts in no time once the big bucks come rolling in. Granted medicine is NOT a field for those looking to make ridiculous amounts of money, those that become doctors for this reason end up regretting it. There are much easier ways to make money than doing this. Still it is a very rewarding field if you have the right reasons for going in.

Best of luck in your pursuits!
