  1. It's eight years total, each service has different programs but the total obligated time between active duty, active reserves (when you have to drill) and inactive reserve (IRR) is always eight years.

    For instance when I enlisted it was only six (it was a longgg time ago) and I went into the Navy as a "Active Mariner"  three years active and three years active reserve. But I was told that for each year I stayed on Active duty that increase my IRR time and decreased my active reserve time but it still all added up to the six (which is now 8)

    Best source of information about the various training programs and enlistement options is a recruiter for that particular service. Talk to all of them to see what they have to offer, some will even offer a sign on bonus and some a bonus after you complete your technical training and most will offer a re-enlistment bonus if you are in a critical or high demand (under-manned) MOS/NEC (job)....

    MOS = military occupational specialty

    NEC = naval enlisted classification code

  2. which country? soldier or officer? For Australia it's four years for a soldier. If you go through ADFA it's nine years. If you go through RMC it's six years.

  3. till your death

  4. 8 years.  It's always 8 years.  It's made up of your active duty time and IRR time (Inactive reserves)  If you serve 2 years Active Duty, you will serve 6 years IRR.  During your IRR time you have no military benefits but they can recall you to active duty at any time during those 6 years.

  5. Last I knew, it was a total of 4 years between active an active reserve and then at least 2 years inactive reserve. If you joined for two years active duty, you would also need to be active reserve (monthly weekend service) for two years and then inactive for the remainder of your time.

  6. All US military contracts (regardless of the branch) are 8 year contracts. You will sign one of three types of contracts:

    4x4: 4 years active duty followed by 4 years of IRR (Inactive Readiness Reserves)

    6x2: 6 years active duty followed by 2 years of IRR

    6x2: 6 years of reserve duty followed by 2 years of IRR

    If you are deployed in the Army then your tour will be 12-15 months long (possibly where the idea of 18 months comes from?).

  7. you sign up between 2 and 6 i believe, but the army can call you back up to your 8 yr mark. so it would be smart jsut to stay in your 8 yrs. thats what my hubby is doin

  8. You enlist for a set period of time depending on the unit and the need.

    Of course if you are killed or badly wounded this changes.

    Usually if you go into a  skilled trades unit such as mechanical or engineering they expect a pay back for the training they give you , it is usually 4 plus 1 so 4 years training plus 4 years service plus  1 year = 9 years.

    If you want to be a grunt on the ground and like to hump for a living the enlistment is what is the flavor of the month depending on need , call up and requirement for deployment.

    I would expect that with selection basic training and deployment you will not get mush change out of 2 years maybe even three...the rest is a guess.
