  1. the only time they will actually pay you is if you are on payroll and are working for them

    ur not gonna get paid if u are volunteering


  2. IT depends on your departments procedure. The department I'm on gets paid after nine months of strictly volunteer service.

    Other departments in the area get paid the first day the join.

    Ask your department- it varies.

  3. You don't. It's volunteer.

  4. Although it does sound like a contradiction, my son is a volunteer firefighter and does get paid a nominal amount for driving the ambulance or fire truck for a call ($5 maybe?).  I do not know how long you have to be there, but it takes awhile to get approved to be the driver.  That is in MD.

    In addition, the volunteer firefighters in my local area of PA get a $100 credit on their taxes, so it isn't totally unpaid in the volunteer sense (not that $100 really makes that much difference in attracting someone to be a firefighter I would guess).
