i have a 3 gallon tank and its been set up with heater and filter for about 2 or 3 weeks... the guys in my local fish shop said i should wait about 4+ weeks because they are delicate... but on internet i have read they can withstand the cycling process and they should live tho it.... so I'm not sure whether to get him now or wait another 1 or 2 weeks

  1. Go ahead and put him in, bettas are very tough fish and dont need to be babied like a lot of other fish. I would have to agree that a heater isn't necessary and honestly neither is the filter in such a small tank, ive kept bettas in 4 gallon glass jar before and had him survive in just plain still tap water for over a year including moving twice which is the most stress you can put on any fish.

  2. I don't think I'd recommend putting a heater in such a tiny tank first off....if they heater were to malfunction even slightly you may cook your betta. Secondly a filter is not necessary but I alway recommend a filter...so that's good. Since you've had it running for 2-3 weeks though...I'm sure the chlorine is gone...and bettas are not THAT delicate! Put him in...and get a ph tester kit, some baking soda (to make it more alkaline) and a bottle of ph down (to make it more acidic) and you'll be good. OH. and the number one cause of tropical fish death is OVERFEEDING...so only feed a little tiny bit.

  3. I would go with 4 weeks or whatever the fish store people said. They work with fish every day and most of the internet sites aren't exactly reliable.

  4. no your betta will be fine.

you should put it in now.

a three gallon tank is far too small to rely on bacteria to dispose of your fishs waste.

you have to treat it like its a bowl and just change some of the water every couple of days.
