  1. Since you're asking in this category, I assume you are asking about noise in your radio.  The length of any ground wire would have little effect on that.  Noise tends to come from two sources, the spark plugs, and the alternator, and it gets into the radio via the power wire in most cases.

You need to determine the source of the noise, and then invest in noise suppression devices to lessen or stop it.

    I suggest starting here:  http://www.crutchfield.com/S-UuVScjvp8QS...

  2. Depending on what it is used for, I always try to keep it as short as possible or no less than 1 foot. You will also need to make sure that you have good clean connections with quality connectors. If you're hooking up high power equipment you should use the same size wire as the power(or as close to it as possible).  Hope that helps!

  3. a ground is a ground no matter what its for, the shorter the better and try to use a thick wire(as thick as you can)

  4. Engine noise?  What do you mean by that? And by ground wire do you mean the negative battery cable or the actual ground strap that bolts to your engine and then to your firewall? If you mean the strap, Then get a heavy gauge one from a parts house and make sure you have a good connection at both ends. Most are 6 gauge or heavier.

  5. I would look into a ground loop isolator(GLI), $14 at radio shack, return if it doesn't work. no harm, no foul.
