How long do passports last?

I was wondering how long they are valid for after I get one, I am not intending to leave on any trips recently, but if they are valid for years, i figured id might as well invest in 1 ahead of time.

For US passports the validity period is 5 years for people 15 years old and younger, 10 years for those older than 15.

   It's always a good idea to have one, even if you are not planning a trip. It will cost you about $9 a year to have it and if you do decide to travel, you can do it at the drop of a hat.

Depends on the country and your age. Some countries only issue five year passports others will issue ten year passports if you are above 16years.
