Question:

How long do phaelenopsis orchids go dormante before new bloosoms appear?

I repotted and cut the stem way back about 2 years ago, so far its producing new leaves...same question goes for dendrobium orchids

  1. Hi Lucky1,

    I assume when you say "dormant", you mean "not in bloom" (since if the orchid is growing leaves, then it's not exactly dormant).

    If you are growing Phalaenopsis species, then it usually bloom once a year. But if you have a hybrid (most likely the case), then it could bloom 2 or even 3 times a year. It's the same case for Dendrobium as well.

    You just have to make sure your Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium are in the right environment. Make sure they are receiving sufficient light (Dendrobium) and have a distinct temperature drop (10 to 15 degree F) (Phalaenopsis) at night to initiate spikes.

  2. If they are not getting enough light and humidity, you will just get leaves.  It happend to me.  After 2 years of waiting,   I bought a stem with orchid blossoms and put it in the pot.  Not real, but prettier than plain leaves.
