  4. They can last long enough to finally be destroyed by being pulled under the continent by plate tectonics!

    In other words,a long friggen time!

Three kinds of plastics are being routinely used.The shredded Low Density Polyethylene LDP degrades in strong sunshine in a couple of years, The High Density Polyethylene takes much longer and The Polypropylene and Polyethylene Terepthalete are  still difficult, if not impossible to degrade and decompose.

  6. When exposed to sunlight, they break down in a couple years.

    When put into a pyrolitic process, we recover the molecules that can be used as one would use crude oil... albeit they need some natural gas added to get a low-carbon fuel.

    When we replace 1000 bags with one large denim bag that lasts for years, we stop trying to decide how long these bags may persist in landfill.
