i have a dog that's a sheltie and he's 12 years old. he's in pretty good shape. He gets a well balanced diet for his age and i take him for a walk almost every morning i can get the chance. and of course i can give him all the love my heart can possibly give to him. i guess shelties are considered medium sized dogs. just wondering if any of you guys have about the same size and age (or once did)

how long do you think he will live for? on average?

  1. If they are in good health, 10-15 years.

  2. I'd say he's got a few years left if he has no health problems now.  It is nice to see a dedicated owner; keep up the good work.

Shelties are smaller dogs, so they can live into their mid-teens and beyond with proper care.

  3. i think probably 13 or 14 years... thats how long most dogs live

  4. I'd say 14 years + since it's in good shape :)

  5. 10-15 years average life span of most dogs that are in good health and well taken care of

  6. Well, my grandma had a Sheltie named Sassy when I was younger and she lived to be 21!! So i think it just depends on the dog, but I would say you can at least expect another good 5 years. I know smaller breeds live longer than big breeds.

  7. I had a dog that lived for 17 years. The vet was surprised when I would bring her in to get her shots.  Then one day Miss Cassy went to sleep and never woke up.  She was a happy dog and one of my best friends. She is still around in spirit watching over me just like she always done.

  8. I work at a Veterinary Clinic and see a lot of old shelties. There was actually one that was almost 20!! Crazy, huh!! It sounds like you are Wonderful pet owner and I wish you and your sheltie many more happy years together.

  9. I had a sheltie cross for 15 years, she was in perfect health, besides having some bad teeth. She had been in to the vet and they said she was in perfect health, and about 2 months later she had a stroke : ( After about a week we had to put her down..

Things can change so fast!!! But I think 14+ would be a good approximation.

They are amazing dogs, adn I am finally ready to get another one, that I have put a deposit on for spring!!

  10. o i have a sheltie my self... he will be 2 in a month.. i think the life expectancy is the same for them as it is for any dog, so he has a good two to three years left
