  1. I think it is at least 6 months of the previous tax year.

    but it might be the whole year.  I know its only 6 more more months to be considered a resident of that state.


  2. You usually have to live in-state for 12 months.

Usually a year.  The best thing to do is move to your schools location, find a place you are happy staying, and get a job.  Most states require that you are working and paying taxes in that state for a year before they allow you to claim residency.  It is also a good idea to register to vote in that state.  You'll also have to get a state driver's license-which is usually really easy...just go to the DMV with you current ID, you'll probably have to take a short written test, but that is all. One other tip.  If you live in a "western" state, look into the WUE (western undergraduate exchange) scholarship.  A lot of schools participate in it.  I am from Colorado originally and I was able to go to school in Hawaii for 10% above in-state tuition. It's a great program and it doesn't require a high GPA or long application.
