Manslaughter is the INvoluntary killing of a human being with no malice aforethought,therefore there is no such thing as voluntary manslaughter. In Britain people have been placed on probation for committing this offence, mercy killings etc. It all depends on the circumstances.

Because Voluntary Manslaughter is an "intentional" killing of another it is more severe than Involuntary Manslaughter.

In my own state it is a Class B Felony with the prison penalty  set for a range of 2-20 years plus court costs and fines.

   (a) A person commits the offense of voluntary manslaughter when he causes the death of another human being under circumstances which would otherwise be murder and if he acts solely as the result of a sudden, violent, and irresistible passion resulting from serious provocation sufficient to excite such passion in a reasonable person; however, if there should have been an interval between the provocation and the killing sufficient for the voice of reason and humanity to be heard, of which the jury in all cases shall be the judge, the killing shall be attributed to deliberate revenge and be punished as murder.

Each state and each country is different.  In my state, it could be about five years and it could be probation.

In the UK it varies - in exceptional circumstances, manslaughter might be punished by a non-custodial sentence, but more often than not it is punished by a custodial sentence which can range from 1 year to life. I am not sure what sentences are imposed in the US.

I don't quite know what you mean my "voluntary" as that sounds as if it's something which was meant to be done and would therefore be murder.  It's only manslaughter if death occurred accidentally.

Anyway, the terms for manslaughter vary much depends on the circumstances anything from 3 - 15 years.

voluntary manslaughter?  I've never heard of that.  I always thought manslaughter meant it was an accident.  It depends on whether or not it was in self-defense or not.
