  1. I'm a student in college attending school studying meteorology. To become a popular meteorologist will have to devote a lot of time and effort, And oh yeah you need to have a lots of math. You need a strong algebra, geometry and trigonometry background because to take Calculus 1, 2 and 3, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra... Have fun with lots of math. You need to have lots of physics and chemistry.

  2. Actually if you want to be super-famous, you don't need that much education.  I think the correlation with how famous you are is inversely related to how much education you get.  You need an AMS endorsement through a correspondence course in meteo, and a dynamic personality with a good hook, or 'schtick.'  By that I mean kind of a gimmick that helps viewers remember you and think of you as a brand.  They  will immediately associate you with who they like and trust for their weather info.

For famous, you want to become a broadcast meteorologist for a news station in LA, NYC, or Chicago.  To become a broadcast meteorologist, you just have to take a correspondence course in meteorology that is approved by the AMS.  You get sort of the 'reader's digest' version of education, skipping a lot of the very difficult stuff that meteorologists have to go through to learn.  Note, meteorologists who have at least a 4-year degree kind of look down on correspondence meteorologists.  But the other 99.999% of people out there will think you're the pooh!

Anyway, after the correspondence course and AMS endorsement, you usually have to cut your teeth in a very small market (think Fargo, or Bozeman Montana or Chico California).  If you have a good enough 'schtick,' and command a good enough viewership then you may be able to get the attention of larger markets, which is where you want to go to become famous.

But anyway, you won't be the most educated of meteos, but you will much more likely be famous.  PhDs are usually unknown outside of the academic arena, but can be very famous and highly respected by academic meteorologists.

On the other hand, I know a couple of broadcast meteos. here in LA and I'm surprised at how much they know when I talk to them.  I'm a grad student and they know enough to talk about probably at least 80% of the concepts that I know.  There are some famous meteos. that actually have a 4 year degree in meteo with a minor or second major in Journalism.  But it's easier just to do the correspondence thing.

    Good luck!

  3. To become famous, you would have to either do a lot of publications, a lot of major field work, or you could work live on tv. Meteorology school only takes 4 years if you want a Bachelor's Degree. My only hope is that you are at least decent at math because there is plenty of it.

  4. it depends on what u want to do. go on tv or publish a book. maybee self publish ur book and maybee think about making ur book a tad bit loger around 120 pages. overall it takes 4 years to get a bachlors degree and u can go anywhere from there it just depends on what u wanna do. good luck
