How long do you have to go to university to become a midwife?

i'm starting university next september and i read on a few websites that you have to go for 4 years just like if you want to study to be a nurse but i heard from a woman you have to go for 7 years! she said you have to become a nurse then go back and become a midwife and do night courses.. i don't think this is true?
