How long do you have to leave a message on voicemail/answering machine?

I want to leave a friend a message for them to get later,

but how long do I have, before it stops recording?

I can say everything I need to in a minute.

Well...back in the day when there used to be tapes in answering machines still, the user could pick how long they wanted it to record for. It was usually around two minutes. If the machine hangs up on you....just call back again and finish what you were saying.
