How long do you have to live in California before you get the resident rate at universities?

I know that california residents get a better deal on california universities along with a small scholarship from the state. Does anyone have any info on this and know how long you have to live in california before you get those rates?

The important part  is INTENT to live inside the state boundaries for at least one calendar year and one day.

You have to be living in California for a year before you can be considered a California resident.

Once you become a California resident you'll be eligible for the Pell grants that are offered but make sure that you file you're paper work and fill out your fafsa far enough in advance at least month so that you get the money that you need.

The answer to this question is not as easy as it seems.  There are MANY stipulations and sometimes it varies from school to school.  Not only do you have to live in that state for a year or more, but you also have to meet other requirements as well.  It is also possible to live in the state for 4 years and STILL not be a "legal" resident of that state and get the cheaper tuition.  

There are usually stipulations about being financially self supporting and your intent on moving to the state.  If you start college right away upon moving to California you will be charged out of state tuition no matter how long you live there.... something they don't want to admit and most folks make this mistake and assume they can just change to instate once they've been their a year.  Which isn't going to happen.
