How long do you have to stay in the US to get a passport.?

I got my green card in 2004.

Am I eligible to aply for an American passport now??

  1. you have to be an American citizen to get an American passport


  2. No, you have to be a US citizen to apply for a US passport.

  3. If you have a green card through marriage, you can apply to become a citizen after three years, otherwise it is after five years.  Then, once you have become a citizen, you can apply for a US passport.  Please note that it can take over 18 months to get citizenship, depending on where you live.
