  1. Generally overnight would be the max, they would really just want to make sure that you are re-hydrated and that your core temp is not elevated.  If there are other factors just as advanced age or other ailments it could be longer.


  2. only as long as you have insurance to pay for it.

If it is strictly dehydration I cannot imagine they would keep you any longer than overnight and I would even be surprised at that.  They will keep you as long as it takes to push fluids and monitor you to make sure there is nothing further going on.  I had to go to the hospital for an abcess in my throat and since I had swollen tonsils I was slightly dehydrated.  The fluids took about two hours, it was the longest part of my emergency room visit.  I'm guessing it would largely depend on how much fluid they wanted to push?
