I have over 5 years worth and not sure how far to go back and what to get rid of. Is there a rule of thumb?

  1. I use online statements. Credit card companies provide 6 - 12 months.

  2. In addition to what vb posted, keep the final statement from any credit card account you close forever.  Just in case.

  3. as long as it takes to review -- write the check and then burn!!!

  4. Wage slave (W-2s, nothing fancy on your tax return), 3 years.

Self-employed and statements show items on tax return, 6 years.

If I have a statement backing up the expense of a large purchase, I save it as proof I spent the money.
