I am a division 1 track and field athlete, and very athletic overall (20 years old). I want to bike from a town in Massachusetts to a town in New Hampshire. The route is 95 miles, with not too much turning, but I'm not sure about the hills.

  1. time would pass pretty quickly if you stufy simple math formulas while riding.  d=rt  t=d/r.

  2. If you can average 200 mph then it will only take 20 minutes!!

  3. LOL.....d=r*t.   Reminds me of an old Pixies song.   :o)

As a beginner, even if you're fit, riding that distance might just kill you....softly.   If you want to give it a shot, go for it, but be prepared to stop short or to feel really really sore and wiped out for the next several days.   I'd recommend that you work up to it by cycling increasing distances over at least a couple of months before you attempt a long ride like that.

To answer your question, though......assuming a relatively easy course, superfit riders can complete 100 miles in 4-1/2 to 5 hours (pro racers can do it in less time).   Most reasonably fit riders that can go the distance will complete it in 6-8 hours.   If you're not ready for it but can handle a suffer-fest, 9 hours or more.

It's just about conditioning your muscles, cardiovascular system, and metabolism.....it takes time.   Then again, being young and fit, maybe you can do it without too much trouble.  Just listen to your body as you train for a little while....you're the best judge of your abilities, y'know?    :o)

  4. As has been said, a 100 mile ride necessitates preparation.

I recently picked up a copy of "Bicycling Magazine's Century Training Program : 100 days to 100 miles]" by Marla Streb.

The book is designed to help the reader devise a personal, practical plan for reaching the century mark.  There are many factors that you want to consider, and this text addresses some of the concerns you may not otherwise anticipate.

My copy was printed in 2005 in paperback.  You may find a copy at your local library.

Bicycles like turns...it's those freakin' hills!

  5. How much experience do you have on your bicycle?  And what type of bike is it?

Given a decent road bike, I would bet on seven hours total, not just bike time.  That may sound conservative to some, but I don't know what the hills are like, and I don't know what the wind will do to you.

Eat, drink, eat, drink, ride a steady pace.  Take it easy in the first thirty miles, or you will pay dearly in the last thirty.

  6. My best time ever for a century was 3 hours 59 minutes. My worst time- well I didn't have a worst time because I didn't finish. Currently, at 47 years old, my average time is just under 7 hours.

I suggest that you take a slow car ride along your chosen route. Look at the terrain and make note of all the possible stops along the way for bathrooms and for replenishment.

A century is something that you have to build up to. I suggest that you start with a 20 mile ride, then add 10 miles each week until you get to your goal.

HANDSUM- You need to quit answering until you can do it intelligently. A 100 mile distance going 200mph would take 30 minutes, not 20.
