On the August long weekend (in Canada) I will be climbing the mountain in the picture above.

It is 10535 ft / 3211 m tall.

Let's for fun do a poll of:

1) Will I make it?

2) How long will it take me (to go up)?

  1. Nigel is really more of a scramble than a "climb."  If you like low-angle slogging up a through a slippery slag heap, go for it (it should only take you about 3 hours to the top if you're fit and the weather is good but you'll really want a beer afterwards).  A boring trudge but great views.  I'd recommend stiff boots and gaiters to keep the scree shards out.

If you actually want a really nice modest mountaineering experience with some snow, ice and crevasses, why don't you climb Athabasca, right near by?  I've done the Silverthrone route twice (you'll need ropes, crampons and ice axes) and it's a great practice snow route day climb (start from the campground before dawn and you'll be back for dinner).  If you want some variety you can go down the back way (the Andromeda side.) The only part that stinks is the shale scree ridges on the Icefield approach (and with global warming there is more of that every year) but all of Nigel is like that.

  2. Can't really tell much about the mountain from the picture. Normally you can walk about 1 mile / 1000ft elevation every hour which is class 3 hiking. When you get to class 4 you will be able to climb 500 to 1000 ft per hour depending on your climbing ability. Class 5 (technical rock climbing) it usually takes at least 2 hours per 1000ft.

    Good Luck

  3. 1)Considering Nigel Peak climbers usually approach from the SW side, and they only gain 1,175 meters in elevation, the 10,535 height is deceptive.  The base of the mountain is at over 5,000'.

A guide isn't required, so I figure you will make it

    2) It's considered a day climb, so I say it will take you...hmmm...a day.

    3)  Have fun, and be safe!
