Question:

How long does Walmart.com usually take to take the money from your checking account?

I ordered a mini-fridge for my dorm room (Aug 5) and when I ordered it, I made sure I had enough money in my checking account to pay for it. Walmart withdrew the money on August 14 and it overdrew my account. I now have $350 in overdraft fees and $40 left in my savings account after paying for all of it. This is not the ideal situation for a student who is moving across the country for college in a few days. This is also the first time I've ever overdrawn my account.

Is it normal for Walmart.com to take that long to get the money from your account? I used my debit card, so I figured it would take about three days to process and have the money taken out.

  1. First of all, call your bank.  If you have never overdrawn your account before, they should be willing to give you back some, if not all of your fees.  If you have a savings account, ask them to link it to your checking account for overdraft protection so that won't happen again.

As to what happened with Walmart, I would imagine that maybe there was some kind of delay in processing your order.  Or perhaps they don't process the charge until the item ships.  Either way though, you should start watching the transactions on your account.  You should be able to do that online so you know how much money you have in your account.

    Good luck.

  2. If you ordered it online then yes they probably did not charge your card until it was close to being shipped.
