How long does a carrier bag really last?

You often hear that they last 300 years, but knitters who use carriers to stash their balls of wool in, say that they last about 2 or 3 years then fall apart in flakes as they try and pull them out of the pile.

  1. A plastic carrier bag degrades at different speeds depending where it is stored or how it is disposed of.

    In landfill, plastic bags will last a long time, maybe hundreds of years.

    The frightening thought is that plastic has only been around in big quantities for 50-60 years. That means that all the plastic that has ever been made by man has hardly begun to decompose. That's hundreds and millions of tons!!!
