  1. If you don't overdose ammonia, probably 1 month.

I finished mine in less than 2 weeks with my 75 gallon before. But that's by using Cycle (beneficial bacteria product).

And the previous tank, a 30 gallon, was cycled in 2.5 weeks but FISH, again with Cycle.

Some people don't use Cycle properly and claim that they don't work. They do. Just remember to shake before hand, else a cap won't have any hibernating bacteria. And pouring directly into the filter really helps too.

  2. if you are using ammonia then it averages about 3-4 weeks but can be quicker especially if you know anyone who can give you squeezings from their mature filter.

  3. You should at least cycle for two weeks.  Introduce some organic matter to the water to speed things up.  You can usually buy some kind of solution from a pet store to speed things up.  I suggest getting "Bio Boost" from Jack's Aquarium Supplies.  Hopefully there is one close to you.  Any supply store should have some though, just ask the staff.

What also helps a lot is if you already have a healthy established aquarium, use water from that to fill up your new tank about halfway, and top it off with new water.  This will speed things up a lot too.

Buy yourself a water test kit, and test your water daily.  Once you see the ammonia spike come and go you know you are ready to start adding fish.

Let me know if you have any problems or have any other questions.

  4. The smaller the tank the quicker it cycles. Take your water to your local aquatic dealer for testing on week 2 and you should be OK for fish on week 3.

You need something to kick it off so a pinch of flake is a suggestion.

  5. I'll tell you right away that I didn't do any cycles, just make sure that your water is not high in heavy metals. My water seemed ok and I put in fish after my water stayed in there 3 days because of chlorine.
