My horse is all healed now; it has been 2 months. I am moving him to another facility this week. How long should he be quarantined there; and is he really that contagious that the new facility should be concerned? I want to take the proper precautions.

  1. have the vet come out and give you the "okay" to move him to a new facility before you do...just to be on the safe side.

  2. Strangles can and most likely will live in the ground for 6 years. If your horse is clear after that time, you're out of the woods...

  3.    As long as your center knows that your horse previously had strangles, you should be ok. Your center is probably a little nerveous for the safety of the other horses, but as long as your horse is sound in a veterinariansins eyes, you should be ok.

Your horse should stop "shedding" contagion after one month; however, strangles spores live in the ground for a very long time.

  5. Take a look at the last paragraph....6 weeks

  6. No facility wants to have strangles...as you know, it is a really nasty disease..you should let them know hes had it recently (you prolly already have) and they will probably keep him quarantined for at least a week (maybe 2)...thats what we do to every horse that comes into my family's barn...how long they are separated depends on their medical background & where they came from...
