  1. That depends on the speed the train is traveling.  At the crossings through town, they have to go 25 mph, so it would take about 10 minutes to fully cross.

  2. it depends on the track speed limits in the area and if there are any slow orders or restricted speed areas. like going into a yard you have yard limits which is normally a mile or two from the center of the yard but could be more.

  3. speed determines how long this event will take

  4. The average train travels 15 MPH since a mile is 5280 feet and 15 MPH is 22 FPS therfore it would take a train traveling that speed aproximately FOUR HOURS to cross the gate. In my expereince at least.

  5. Depends on how fast it's going

  6. It seems to take much longer when I am in a hurry as compared to other times...but that's how I make my living so I deal with it...

  7. Here is a little tidbit for those who are perpetually stopped at given crossings, in particular, as well as crossings in general.

In some states, there are limitations on the length of time a train may occupy a crossing before having to clear to let traffic proceed.  In California, that time is 10 minutes, and a call to the CHP or municipal police will get action.  The railroad can be fined and the engineer can be ticketed or placed under arrest.

Of course, in the event of a derailment or other emergency situation that prohibits movement of the entire train, the train must clear, if practical, that crossing that the police deem the most necessary.

So, trains can be reported, but in doing so, it is very important to get the engine number of the lead locomotive for identification purposes.

Perhaps when less frustrated, motorists and pedestrians won't circumvent crossing gates as often as they now do and paying the highest price for doing so.  Obey warning devices.

  8. Ha!  Trick question!

Trains don't cross a crossing gate; they stay on the track. CARS cross a crossing gate!

  9. The length of time for mile long train to cross a crossing gate is determined by its speed at the time of crossing. There are as many answer as there are traveling speeds.

  10. Depends on speed of the train.
