  1. When you turn the melons over and they have a good yellow spot on them and the first inch of the vine going into the melon is brown and not green..it is ready to pick..watermelons will ripen no further after off of the vine..so don't pick early

  2. Look at your seed packet and it will tell you, depending on the variety, how many days are required for the melon to ripen. They usually require 65 to 75 days to ripen.

One possible way to determine when a melon is ripe is when the white underside of the melon turns yellow and the 3 tendrils on either side dry. (Sometimes, if you wait too long for the tendrils to dry the watermelon may be too ripe.) So, wait for the recommended ripening time on the seed packet, look for the underside of the melon to turn a yellow-creamy color and only harvest one at a time to taste and check for ripeness.

Another secret, naturally, is in the touch. "If they're rough, you can tell they're ripe. And lift it up. The watermelon should feel heavy for it's size it's 92 percent water.

If you have lost your seed packet call your local nursery, they will be able to help you. But if you follow these rules of thumb you should be OK. Faira
