How long does a post and core procedure take?

i got a root canal done and now my dentist told me he was going to put this post thing in my tooth.

  1. It depends on whether he is placing a prefabricated post and them building up the tooth himself, or if he is just removing some of the root canal material and preparing a post space and then taking an impression and having the lab make a solid custom made post and core.

    Doing the first procedure could take upwards of an hour, making the post space, cementing in a post and doing a core buildup.  A crown would normally follow this being done, so he would likely do a crown impression at that point.

    The second way just takes a few minutes.  To remove some of the gutta percha and then do an impression and send it away for a post and core to be made at the lab.  They may also do a crown at the same time, or he may just do the post and core and then cement that into your tooth and then do the crown impression.  Depends on what he likes doing.


  2. I had my root canal done about six years ago so I don't recall exactly, but I think the post took less than an hour, and was not bad at all.
