I just got a temporary filling to cover my root canal, but i have to go back to the dentist in a month or 2 for them to finish it, how long will it last, if it is softer than a real filling, and could crumble and fall out if you chew on it? I wasnt sure, anyone with experience?? Thanks in advance. =]

  1. Hello...Ok,are you saying you have a "temp" crown over the tooth or are you saying you have a "temp" filing in the opening used to remove the nerve ?  Actually there is no reason to wait a month and especially not two months to complete the procedure....unless you had a super dooper amount of infection at the bottom of the tooth.....Sounds like your DDS got you out of pain and is in no hurry to use chair time to complete your procedure when he or she can use the chair time to do other $$$$$$ procedures...after all your already in the bank...If you have a "temp" crown it's not good to have it in place more than three weeks. If you only have a "temp" filing you can have it in place as long as it stays there in good shape....Good luck and I wish you well.

  2. I got a temporary filling in a small cavaty one time. It lasted a whole year before they took it out and did a real filling on it. If that helps any.

  3. I had a temporary filling on my top right. He did it only because I had just had 2 fillings done and didn't want to keep me laying down for to long because I would get light headed. Anyway mine for a couple of weeks and yes I could chew on it. Just nothing like a candy apple or anything.

  4. It varies from person to person and surface to surface. Chewing surfaces get more pressure, and likely will not last as long.

They're called temporaries for a reason - and two months is way too long to wait for permanent restoration. As soon as the tooth and surrounding area heals... usually a week or two, you can get permanent repair.

And if you've had root canal, you'll likely need more than a filling, you'll probably need a crown.

    Good luck.
