Question:

How long does a torn calf muscle take to heal?

I torn my left calf muscle nearly 4 weeks ago now. I went to the hospital where they treated me for a DVD ( which it wasn't) and diagnosed me with a torn muscle.

I have been resting it and trying to do a bit more walking everyday but i still can't put my heel to the floor or walk without 1 crutch.

The pain as well has moved to all over my leg instead on just 1 side. It is throbbing everyday and it is worse at night. It is still swelling, this happens mainly in the evening.

Am i doing something wrong? and how long does it normally take to heal? or does the pain get worse before it gets better.

Thanks

  1. Expect it can take six to eight weeks.  Muscle is well vascularized and does heal well, just give it time. Continue to stay off of it as much as possible and keep it elevated. If it goes on too much longer I would consider seeing a primary care physician. I'm assuming you went to the emergency room the first time? I would try to avoid the ER. See someone who will be more thorough.

  2. 6-8 weeks for full recovery ,

  3. That thing need rest. You can re-hurt over and over and don't realize it. Maybe by keeping it band that would help.

  4. Have you had an ultra-sound done, or any other type of scan?

Sounds like it is not healing right.  I had a similar problem, and it wasn't until I had the scan, that we found that the tear hadn't healed at all and a large hematoma had formed.  I had to have all the "dead" blood sucked out before the healing process could continue.

It was about 8-9 weeks before walking was comfortable, and about 6 months before I could run on it again.
