How long does a typical day of golf take?

I am going to play golf on a course for the first time. It's an 18 hole course... about how long would we be playing on average?

18 hole par 72--the outing shouldn't take you more than 4.5 hours. Now getting there, warming up, etc. can obviously add to all of that.

4 to 5 hours. The key is to make sure that you never fall more than a hole behind the group in front of you. When they're on the green on a par 4, you should be teeing off, or ready for your second shots.

Have you ever swung a golf club before?

Its about 4 hours for a good golfer.

It will take 4 hours per hole if you don't know how to golf.

Take a couple lessons, go to the range, play a par 3 course first.

If you've never played before you should probably avoid a 'full size' aka championship course.  You're going to play very poorly,  get frustrated and likely decide that you never want to play again.  I'd suggest you start out by finding a par 3 (pitch & putt) type of course, work yourself up through short courses and eventually once you're more comfortable with your game tackle a full size course.  Having said all of that a round of 18 holes can take from 3 to 5 hours depending on how busy the course is and how well/poorly you play.

A walking twosome should take no more than three hours. It doesn't much matter how good you are. Slow play by just one group ruins for everyone else. I have had friends that walk up to the green , put out, and hit their next tee shot when playing with slow players. some still don't get the point.
