Man odd choice for a pet, they can get like 9 feet long and have some pretty nasty chompers. I use them for snapping turltle bait anyway 5 years dont come close to the age of an alligator gar although i dont know how old they can get i know it takes a long time to get 9 foot.

Anyway, the answer is they could live up to 5 years or 3 months. Do not recommend having them with a lot of other fish....they get stressed out because they eat feeder fish and if others try to eat the same...they get stressed very easily. You'll notice they stay close up to the top of the water, when they are stressed.  Hope this helps
