How long does bacon fat keep and how should I store it?

I seem to remember my mom pouring it into an old coffee can to store it and she put it in the cupboard but I have a feeling that this isnt the best way to go about it. If it is please let me know but if not how should I do it so that it keeps as long as possible.

Left on the counter away from the stove it can keep for about 1 month or two but in my case, I use lots of bacon fat and constantly use and replenish my bacon fat. So, it doesn't stay around very long. But, i do like to keep mine in a sealed plastic container, filtered in the fridge. I have kept large quanities in the fridge for 6 months without a problem. But i wouldnt keep it longer than that (picks up funky smells you know)

bacon fat can be left in a can outside for a long time dont worry it is only the fat and will not go bad

Covered in the refrigerator it will last for months. My mother used to have a little 3 piece set that sat on the stove. It was a salt & pepper set with a matching can that said grease right on it. She would pour bacon grease in it and it just sat there on the stove at room temperature. Nobody died from bad grease, but I wouldn't recommend it today

My mom always kept hers in a coffee cup right on the counter, by her stove. It never went bad, and we never got sick..however, I'm a little more paranoid. It just doesn't sit well with me, so I keep it in a mug in the fridge, and it lasts forever.

put it in a plastic container and put the container in the freezer in the freezer it would last about a year or so
