  1. Interestingly enough, camera batteries are not measured in how long they can supply power to a camera, but the number of shots it can take between charges.

Turning on the camera and leaving it turned on is not what will assure that you will be able to complete a shoot without needing a second battery in your pocket.

Many of us use a battery pack/vertical grip so we have two batteries attached to the camera at all times with the added benefit of the added weight so we do not have to worry as much about camera movement ... more mass, less accidental movement and what movement there is, is smooth.

My battery will give me just about 1000 images before I have to think about changing it. ... x2 because I always use a battery pack.

IF, you leave the lenses VR or IS feature turned on, have the auto-focus set to continuous, always have the image displayed on the LCD after each shot and use live view a lot, that figure can drop substantially

During one fireworks shoot, using live view, my camera battery only lasted for 12 shots.  You can see that using energy management is very important.

    * Always turn off the camera between shots if the time interval lasts more than a minute.

    * Refrain from showing off your images to your friends, model or clients unless absolutely necessary.

    * Always charge the batteries the night before you shoots

    * AND perhaps most important ... only use OEM batteries and chargers.
