How long does disk defragement take?

How long does disk defrag take when i have never done it before and have had my computer for about a year? I read somewhere it can take up to 9 hours? Is that true? O.o

No. I do mine about every 3-4 months. Takes about 20-30 minutes.

I try to defrag mineregularlyy so it only takes me 15 mins at the most. Unless I have a bunch of .... c**p   on there then as the other 2 said   1hour or more.

it usually takes about 5-10 minutes when i do it, but i do it about every week or so if ive been downloading stuff.  i guess it may take longer if you've never done it.  it wont do any harm. it's just putting all your files in order and making things tidy..just let it get on with it...er..you have done a disc cleanup haven't you as well? i thought everything was MS Vista now? doesn't Vista do it automatically? I'm still with XP.

It can take a long time depending on what program you use. i use "Auslogics Disk Defrag" which is very fast and works very well. For my computer with about 60 GBs of files it takes like 15 minutes. It also varies on how much stuff you have on your computer though, and how often you defrag it.

Oh and yah as everyone else says, if you never do it it can take 2+ hours, but its worth it

It just depends on how big your hard drive is and how much the drive is fragmented. It usually takes me 2-5 hours. But I don't use the Microsoft Defragmenter I prefer PerfectDisk.
