How long does it normally take (average) to get a PHD, if you can only go to night and weekend classes?

  1. Most of your regular courses at the beginning of your PhD are offered in the daytime (there are exceptions of course).  After you pass your comps you have a freer schedule.  I know people who went part-time and it took about 10 years, which is the limit at many schools.  


  2. You can get a PhD by taking classes?

    I thought you had to do original research.

  3. No offense, but Graduate School is NOT like your undergraduate studies. To obtain a Ph.D, you have to have taken classes, attend seminars/talks/speeches AND conduct research of which you will write a unique dissertation. Usually, if you do all this, you are looking at 5 years, and that's without ANY other obligations.. no other job. Your research IS your job.

    Depending on your major you wish to go to Graduate school for, you may have to do Master's degree first, which is more classes than research and can "usually' be done "part-time" (which is what you are suggesting with your "night and weekend" only status). That might be something you should look into.
