  1. Don't forget the ferry ride

  2. It depends on if you are going to go through Nova Scotia or Labrador. Either way, plan on at least 4 days and that with some heavy driving. Also, be sure to book the ferry in advanced so that you are sure you will get a spot. My crossing last August, there were literally hundreds of vehicles waiting to get on and the front car had been waiting to get on for 3 days. NOT FUN!

    Good luck!

  3. It depends on where you are starting from in Alberta and where you are heading in Newfoundland.  If you are crossing to Port aux Basques on the ferry and have to drive to St. John's from there, you have one whole day of driving after you get off the ferry.  In the summer you can cross to Argentia, which is much closer to SJ, but requires approximately the same travel time overall.

To get from say, Fort McMurry (Newfoundland's second largest city :)  to North Sydney in Nova Scotia (where the ferry terminal is) is about 3700 miles, or 6000 kilometers.  So if you can average 100 km per hour all the way (which you probably can't), that is 60 hours of driving.   The distance and driving time to get to Labrador City in Labrador is actually not much different, because you head into Labrador from Baie Comeau in Quebec, so the driving time is maybe about 4 or 5 more hours.

If you use mapquest and do a search from your own address to North Sydney that will give you an idea of the driving time to get to the ferry.  As others have mentioned, have reservations for both the crossing and for berths or a cabin if you are crossing at night especially.   The ferry crossing to Port aux Basques can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours, depending on the time of year.  The Argentia crossing, available only during tourist season takes about 14 to 18 hours.

I hope this helps.  Here are links to both mapquest and to Marine Atlantic so you can see the ferry crossing schedules.  Best of luck.

  4. Calgary to Newfoundland....approximately 5 days ...but...you might have to wait overnight for the ferry depending on how good your timing is...be sure to call ahead as you might not get lucky enough to be able to get on...give yourself 6 days and enjoy your travels...oh, and if you are travelling right now, then be careful of the weather....snow is not over and it might slow you down.

  5. 5 days to a week.  Depends on how many hours you're putting in.
