Question:

How long does it normally take to get a call back after an acting audition?

I auditioned for a Lead role in a film a week ago. The director seemed to be very please with my improv audition, and when I left he shook my hand and said, "We will be calling you" with a smile. But, I haven't received a call yet. I keep thinking to myself, maybe he thought that he would call me until someone auditioned after me that maybe was better. I am going crazy here. Don't they normally call within a week? What do you think?

  1. That's the problem with auditioning; you only hear when you got it, but no one calls if you didn't.

Was there any indication of when shooting would start?  If it's very soon, I'd say they went with someone else.

And don't call to see if you got the part.  If you got it, they'd call you; if you didn't, you're just bothering them.

  2. You are working from a position of weakness when you sit around by the phone waiting for the call back that never comes. Like you're doing now! You should have already lined up your next five auditions and move on..... Also, if you don't have anything else to do outside acting then you're in double trouble. Get a life outside acting so that you are not camping out by the phone.

Lastly,  when they shake your hand and give you a glowing review on the way out the door, you're most likely not going to hear from them.... They are  just being nice and supportive. You don't need nice or the support/approval of a direcot. As a professional, you know when you've done your job welll, and you know when you stink.... So, don't live on the praise of others. LET YOUR CALL-BACK RATE BE YOUR REWARD ALONE.....

  3. You're right, normally they do casting calls and pick out the roles within the same week, so that way the next week they can call the actors who are picked.

It could be that the movie has been delayed, accidents happen and sometimes the show does NOT go on. But then again, never think that you have something in the bag because someone better (or with more money to donate) could come along.

If anything call them back and see if they have already hired their actors. Don't ask if you got the position, just ask if the calls have already been made.

  4. i have been at an audition for a school play, and i know that we didn't find out the callbacks for three weeks. i'm sure a school one doesn't have nearly as many people audition as a film would. the director may have a tough choice ahead of him. When i was assistant director for a school musical-we tried to get it narrowed down as much as possible and keep the list as short as possible; it took us two weeks over break. i wouldn't sweat it, the director has to make a choice that's going to be really hard. i'd give it another two weeks before you make any assumptions. i know exactly how you feel;maybe not quite, but pretty close. good luck and hope everything turns out great in the end.

  5. I'll agree with answer 1 on only 1 point.

First of all with no offense to you, the director seems to have been Kind at least, if not genuine. There is no dictated time frame, other than what is dictated by budget and a start date for filming, and even that can be shot around.

Auditioning for a lead??? Hmmm, is this a major film, or major company? I ask because your statement, "I'm going Crazy" sounds like you haven't had much experience with auditioning, or rejections.

In any case the point is, You might be able to get an answer in calling them, though that is rather self demeaning. If you do that submissive call, you should probably remain anon, initially, asking only whether or not the part has been filled, Certainly not "DID I GET IT"...sigh. Again, I mean no offense, but the director might just be a nice person, though YOU may not be the best choice.

Beyond that, hopefully you haven't sunk all your chips into just one chance.
