Question:

How long does it normally take to write a letter of recommendation?

I am applying for an internship and had to get a letter of recommendation from two professors. They are being sent directly, without me seeing them. I asked both professors to contact me after they sent the letters out. I have heard from one of the professors, but not the other. It has been a little over a month since they received instructions on how to write the letter, and I must have the entire application in by 9/1. Should I contact the professor or stick it out a little while longer? His letter is the only missing piece of my application.

  1. Professor are asked to write 100's of letters, plus keep up with all their other duties.  It is possible that with all he has to do it has been misplaced.  A friendly reminder message is not unappropriate.  Just remember to be brief and concise with the request.

  2. I would contact the professor by phone and ask him to email/fax you it and for you to send it. However if he says that he will send it directly to the employer ask the professer to send you an email or contact you when he has done/sent it and ask the employer to contact you when they recieve it. Good Luck with the internship!!
